Do you wear western clothes to work but feel your best in a sari? Do you have a fondness for roast lamb but spend most nights dining on curries and roti? Do you love living in New Zealand, but also feel a strong kinship to your Indian heritage?
If so you might have just what it takes to become 2018’s Miss IndiaNZ! Miss IndiaNZ is a unique and spectacular celebration of the Kiwi Indian culture. It’s a magical way to embrace and express your Indian roots, and it’s an unmissable event for those who reside in the Land of the Long White Cloud, but who identify strongly with both the Kiwi and the Indian culture.
The brainchild of renown event producer Dharmesh Parikh, Miss IndiaNZ has gone from strength to strength since its inaugural pageant in 2002. It is now an unmissable occasion for the ever-growing number of Indian Kiwis who have chosen to make their home Down Under.
“Miss IndiaNZ is not just another pageant. It’s all about Bollywood, glitz, glamour and diversity and is an amazing celebration of who we are as Kiwi Indians,” says Dharmesh. “It doesn’t just showcase beauty – it’s jam-packed full of fashion, dance and music. It’s an extravaganza!”
And for most of these talented women it’s not about the prize. It’s about embracing their culture, and sharing their love of it with the world. It’s about expressing who they really are.
“Ninety percent of our participants join to reconnect with their roots and to gain confidence. We can only recall a few applicants who have ever asked us what the ‘prize’ is!”
Contestants find the experience fun, rewarding and empowering. For many it has even been life changing. As well as celebrating this unique Kiwi Indian culture, Miss IndiaNZ provides a platform for young women of Indian heritage to launch into acting, modelling and the entertainment industry on an international stage.
“It has been the springboard for many dynamic careers over the past 15 years, and I hope it will continue to be so for many years to come,” says Dharmesh.
